Honda is recalling 3,940 Accords and Civics because of problems with the driver’s side air bag, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) . Model year 2001 vehicles are affected. The air bag inflator could produce excessive pressure and rupture, sending metal fragments through the airbag and possibly impacting the driver and passengers, NHTSA said. BMW is recalling 2,500 M3s with optional double clutch transmissions, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 2008-2009 model year is affected. When braking quickly at low speeds, the transmission software may cause the engine to stall. This could increase the likelihood of a crash, NHTSA said. An interesting statistical compilation on CNN.com shows that California’s employment rate is 49th in the country, just ahead of Rhode Island and Michigan, which are tied for 50th. California has a 8.2% unemployment rate. The lowest unemployment rates in the country are in South Dakota and Wyoming, which both have a rate of 3.3%. A Mira Mesa plumbing and heating contractor will have to pay more than $67,000 in fines for its role in the May 2008 explosion of a San Diego hotel, according to published reports. The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CalOSHA) levied the fines against Sherwood Mechanical Inc. for four violations. Six other contractors were also fined. Fourteen workers were seriously burned at the Bayside Hilton when a portion of the structure exploded. The hotel was under construction. Approximately five million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles recalled due to a fire risk have not been repaired and are at risk for catching fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The vehicles have defective cruise control switches that could cause them to catch fire even when not running. NHTSA says about seven million owners have already had their vehicles repaired, and the organization is urging the remaining five million owners to have their vehicles serviced. The number of people killed in car crashes reached an all-time low in 2007, but the number of people killed in pickup truck crashes has increased 55% since 1975, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Last year, pickup trucks accounted for the highest number of deaths per registered vehicle in single-vehicle crashes. There were 59 deaths for every million vehicles registered. Since 1978, pickups and SUVs have had a higher percentage of rollover deaths than cars. Single-vehicle rollover crashes accounted for 47% of occupant deaths in SUVs, 38% of occupant deaths in pickup trucks and 21% of occupant deaths in cars …. »

The Department of Labor reported today that the number of people drawing unemployment benefits nationwide jumped to 3.84 million in October, the highest level since 1983. The numbers are a bit skewed however, because the workforce has grown from 87 million Americans in 1983 compared with 134 million today. Thus, the unemployment rate, though high at 6.1%, is still lower that the 10.4% rate in February of 1983. With the slumping economy, many employers have been forced to slash jobs.
