The Department of Labor reported today that the number of people drawing unemployment benefits nationwide jumped to 3.84 million in October, the highest level since 1983. The numbers are a bit skewed however, because the workforce has grown from 87 million Americans in 1983 compared with 134 million today. Thus, the unemployment rate, though high at 6.1%, is still lower that the 10.4% rate in February of 1983.
With the slumping economy, many employers have been forced to slash jobs. The Labor Department expects the unemployment rate to rise to 6.3% for October.
