President-Elect Nominates Hilda Solis as Labor Secretary

On Thursday, Presiden-elect  Barack Obama announced that he had selected California Congresswoman Hilda Solis to the position of Labor Secretary. In the mid-1990s, Solis became the first Latina elected to the California Senate.

Labor leaders across the state applauded Obama’s pick. As the daughter of immigrants, Ms. Solis grew up seeing the workplace struggles of her parents. She is a tenacious advocate for workers’ rights and should help start restore the rights of workers nationwide.

Subaru Tribeca Recall

Subaru is recalling more than 5,000 of its Tribeca SUVs because of a possible problem with the electronic stability control sensor, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.  This sensor helps the driver maintain control of the vehicle during hard braking, sudden turns or other quick maneuvers.

The sensor, known as the Vehicle Dynamic Control G-Sensor, was installed backwards in 5,130 2008-2009 Tribecas.  Subaru will reinstall and reprogram the sensor.

Cooper Tire Recall

Cooper Tire is recalling some of its Cooper CS4 Touring (VR)  tires because the tread could separate from the tires, resulting in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recalled tires are size 215/55R17, produced between September 7 and October 11, 2008.  These tires may not have cured for an adequate period of time.  Improperly cured tires can lead to tread separation.  Cooper will replace the tires free of charge.

Tire Valve Stem Recall

Dill Air Control Products is recalling replacement tire valve stems that could cause tires to lose air pressure, resulting in a crash, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The snap-in rubber valve stems may lack the required additive used to protect the rubber from deterioration.  As a result, these valve stems may wear and crack prematurely and allow air to leak from the tire.  Air pressure loss can result in a loss of vehicle control.

The recalled valve stems are Dill APC TR413, TR414 and TR 418.  They were sold between November 2006 and July 2007.

Land Rover Recall

Land Rover is recalling more than 19,000 vehicles because of a defect that could increase the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Adminstration.

The 2003-2005 model year vehicles could have misaligned front differential coupling sleeves and propeller shafts.  This misalignment could result in spline wear over time.  The wear results in noise and vibration and, ultimately, loss of drive.

Car Seat Recall

Graco is recalling nearly 44,000 Comfortsport convertible car seats because the large body pillow on the seat partially obscures a warning label on the seat pad, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration (NHTSA).

The obstruction of the warning label violates federal standards.  If the car seat is installed improperly in a vehicle, a child could be seriously injured in a crash.  The body pillow is provided for extra comfort only and should be removed.

The affected seats were manufactured from November 1, 2006 through October 8, 2007.

Unemployment Rises Sharply in November

New statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor show 533,000 jobs were lost in November. The unemployment rate rose from 6.5% to 6.7%. Most economists opine that unemployment will continue to rise until the economy begins to turn around, which could be well into next year, or even not until 2010. Further, recnet headlines like Citigroup’s plan to lay off more than 50,000 workers will only add to the total. In the process, decreased consumer confidence only exacerbates the economic downturn.
