The House of Representatives just passed legislation to assure that employers are held responsible for their four-decade-old obligation to provide equal pay for equal work. The bill makes clear that women who are victims of gender-based discrimination can sue for compensatory and punitive damage.
Also today, the House will also vote on a bill in response to a Supreme Court decision that workers must file a discrimination claim within 180 days of a pay violation. Many workers who don’t find out about wage disparities for years are left without recourse under the current case law.
In the first week of the new Congress, these two bills attest to the worker rights agenda of the new Congress and administration.
