Unemployment Rate Continues to Rise

The national unemployment rate continued to rise sharply in February. A total of 651,000 new claims for unemployment benefits were filed, and the unemployment rate rose from 7.6 to 8.1 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported.  Payroll employment has declined by 2.6 million in the past 4 months.  In February, job losses were large and widespread across nearly all major industry sectors.

General Motors is recalling nearly 277,000 model year 2009 vehicles because of a problem with the transmission shift cable, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  The transmission shift cable adjustment clip may not engage.  A driver could put the shifter in the Park position and remove the key, but the vehicle could roll away, NHTSA said.

2009 Chevy Malibu

2009 Chevy Traverse

Mitsubishi Recall

Mitsubishi is recalling more than 39,000 model year 2008-2009 Outlander and Lancer models because of a problem with the brake booster check valve, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The check valve may stick closed when the engine is turned off.  When the vehicle is restarted and driven at slow speeds, the brakes may not function properly, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.

Dodge Ram Recall

Chrysler is recalling 2009 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty Chassis Cabs with manual transmissions and the power adjustable pedal package, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The clutch pedal that connects the rod to the clutch master cylinder may separate from the master cylinder.  This could prevent the clutch from disengaging and result in unintended movement of the truck, increased stopping distance or engine stalling.  All of this could increase the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.

EEOC Discrimination Claims Hit Record High

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports that discrimination claims filed with the Commission last year rose to the highest in the agency’s 44-year history. A record 95,402 claims were filed during the year, the EEOC said, up 15 percent from 2007. According to the EEOC, more than 25 percent of claims filed contained an allegation of age discrimination while more than 34 percent of the filings included complaints of retaliation.

As acting agency Chairman Stuart Ishimaru noted, “it is clear that employment discrimination remains a persistent problem.”
