September 23, 2009 – A Florida man in San Diego on business died in a head-on collision between two pickup trucks on a rural road near Ramona, authorities said.
The accident occurred about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, when a northbound 2004 Chevrolet 2500 drifted over a solid double yellow line on Wildcat Canyon Road in the Barona Mesa area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The truck crashed into an oncoming 1988 Chevrolet 1500, sending it off the roadway and down a dirt embankment, killing the unrestrained 36-year-old man behind the wheel, CHP public affairs Officer Brian Pennings said.
Keith Gregory Sexton of Florida died at the scene, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
The other motorist, 46-year-old Jeffrey James of Ramona, suffered minor cuts to his left arm and declined medical treatment.
It was unclear why James’ truck crossed into the path of the oncoming pickup.
The accident forced a complete closure of the route at San Vicente Road for about two hours, the CHP reported.
The preliminary investigation showed that neither speed, drugs, nor alcohol were factors in the crash, Pennings said.
