October 5, 2009 – The 23-year-old servicewoman who was killed when her car drifted off SR-56 in the Torrey Highlands area, overturned and tumbled down an ice plant-covered embankment, was identified by authorities Friday. Jacqueline O’Day of San Diego was westbound when she lost control of her 2002 Volkswagen Jetta near Camino del Sur early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. A passer-by spotted the crumpled sedan and made an emergency call about 5:45 a.m., the CHP reported. O’Day, an active-duty soldier, died at the scene.

October 5, 2009 – A pickup truck and a trolley collided shortly before 11:00 p.m. Sunday night at the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Avenue in Santee, authorities said. The pickup truck, a Toyota Tundra, was traveling eastbound on Mission Gorge when it collided with the southbound Trolley. None of the Trolley passengers was hurt, but the pickup driver was taken to Sharp Grossmont Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s department. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

October 2, 2009 – Yesterday, a Superior Court judge ruled that several City of San Diego water leaks were not a substantial cause of the Oct. 3, 2007 Mount Soledad landslide, which damaged dozens of homes and destroyed three. The ruling was good news for the City, but it means the homeowners will not be paid for the damage to their homes or for their diminished property values, nor will they be compensated for when they were displaced. “I’m just really disappointed,” homeowner Joyce Clark said. October 2, 2009 – Six hikers were rescued Thursday night after they became stranded on an East County mountain, officials said. The hikers, members of the Desert Angels, a group that searches for missing immigrants, were found around 10:41 p.m. on a mountain near Japatul Valley Road and I-8, said sheriff’s Lt. Hope Andrews. Two of the hikers had fallen and injured their knees and couldn’t make it down the mountain, Andrews said. October 1, 2009 - A 40-year-old man riding a motorcycle was seriously hurt in University City this morning after colliding with a car near University Towne Centre. Police said the motorcyclist was riding south on Towne Centre approaching Executive Drive just after 11 a.m. when he was struck by a Mercedes whose driver was making a left turn in the opposite direction. The driver of the car did not yield to the motorcyclist, police said. The rider was thrown off the motorcycle and suffered a broken upper leg and upper arm. He was taken to a hospital. October 1, 2009 – Authorities are investigating the death of a woman who was found inside a Volkswagen sedan on a SR-56 undercrossing early Thursday morning. She was found in the vehicle beneath SR-56 on Carmel Valley Road just west of Camino del Sur, across from the Evergreen Nursery, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Scheidnes. The car appeared to have been in an accident.
