November 18, 2009 – Ford, Subaru and Volkswagen sit atop the U.S. insurance industry’s annual list of the safest new vehicles, according to a closely watched assessment used by car companies to lure safety-conscious consumers to showrooms. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded its “top safety pick” on Wednesday to 19 passenger cars and eight sport utility vehicles for the 2010 model year. The institute substantially reduced the number of awards compared with 2009, because of tougher requirements for roof strength. November 18, 2009 – A 35-year-old Chula Vista man was in custody Wednesday on suspicion of tying two young boys to a tree and molesting them, police said. The man was arrested around 5 p.m. Tuesday as he arrived home to an apartment complex where the alleged molestation occurred, according to the Chula Vista Police Department. His name was not immediately released. November 18, 2009 – A big-rig hauling empty propane tanks caught fire on an East County freeway late yesterday, causing no injuries but prompting evacuations of several nearby homes and tangling rush-hour traffic in the area. The tractor-trailer began burning for unknown reasons on eastbound I-8 in El Cajon shortly before 4 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. November 18, 2009 – A 15-year-old Hesperia girl was killed last night when she was hit by a pickup truck while walking along a street in that High Desert city, according to San Bernardino County coroner’s officials. Angelina Bandino died at the scene within minutes of the 7:11 p.m. accident Tuesday along the shoulder of Cottonwood Avenue. Deputy sheriffs are investigating the cause of the accident. November 18, 2009 – Two children, ages 3 and 6, were hospitalized along with an adult Tuesday after being injured in a crash in which a vehicle tumbled down a 50-foot embankment in rural North County, authorities said. The crash on Highway 79, between Sunshine Summit and Warner Springs, was reported at 7:07 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Cal Fire dispatcher. Firefighters extricated both children from the vehicle before they were flown to Rady Children’s Hospital, she said. November 17, 2009 – The San Diego City Council voted today to approve a 7.75 percent water rate increase. Starting January 1, 2010, a water bill for a typical single-family home in San Diego will increase by $4.73 a month to $65.76, according to a report from the Water Department. It will be the sixth rate hike since 2007. November 17, 2009 – Motor Trend named the 2010 Ford Fusion as its magazine car of the year. The 2010 Fusion beat out 22 competitors, including the redesigned Toyota Prius, the BMW 7-Series and the Chevrolet Camaro. Motor Trend said the mid-size Fusion offered good performance, comfort and fuel-efficiency. It praised Ford Motor Co. for offering several versions of the Fusion, including a fuel-efficient hybrid and a sporty version with a V-6 engine. November 16, 2009 – San Diego Police and the California Highway Patrol will receive their share of over $3 million in safety grants to enforce seat belt laws. The California Office of Traffic Safety awarded more than $230,000 to law enforcement agencies in San Diego County, according to agency director Christopher Murphy. The rest of the $3 million will be spread among 175 cities and law enforcement agencies throughout the state and to the California Highway Patrol for enforcement of “Click It or Ticket” programs over the next year, Murphy said. November 16, 2009 – A 24-year-old skateboarder died today when he rode into the path of an oncoming car and was struck, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Christopher Toraason Pompa was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1 a.m. collision in the 1600 block of Hacienda Drive, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
