December 1, 2009 – New cars and trucks would be required to have larger and stronger side air bags to prevent motorists from being tossed out of vehicles during rollover crashes, the government proposed Tuesday. The plan is the latest attempt by the government to address deadly rollover crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the proposal, combined with anti-rollover technology, would attempt to reduce the more than 10,000 deaths in rollover crashes every year. December 1, 2009 – The San Jose City Council is expected to formally approve a payment of $97,500 to settle a police brutality claim by a San Jose business owner and his nephew. Ascencion Calderon and his nephew, Samuel Santana, filed suit against the city after they claimed that San Jose police officers had used excessive force and made racial epithets while arresting them during a July 2006 traffic stop. Calderon, who was 65-years-old at the time, and Santana, who was 25-years-old, were booked on one count each of suspicion of resisting or interfering with an officer. 1 Killed, 1 Severely Hurt in Riverside County Crash

December 1, 2009 – A roll-over wreck killed one person and severely hurt another last night in Rubidoux, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials and the California Highway Patrol website. The single-vehicle accident was reported at 11:38 p.m. Monday at 27th Street and Karen Lane, just west of Sierra Avenue. Riverside County coroner’s officials have released no information on the wreck or its victims.
