December 14, 2009 – A 17-year-old driver was traveling on Harmony Grove Road east of Country Club Drive at about 6:30 a.m. when the car went off the road and slammed into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol. A passenger in the vehicle was killed. The driver lost control of the vehicle and was unable to navigate a curve, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office. December 14, 2009 – A man described as a designated driver is in custody – booked for suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter — following a fiery crash that killed a man in Torrey Pines. Michael Patrick Landri was driving an Infiniti G35 that rear-ended a Volkswagen Passat at Genesee Avenue and Torrey Pines Road around 10 p.m. Sunday, causing both vehicles to catch fire, according to the San Diego Police Department. December 14, 2009 – A woman was seriously hurt Sunday night after she was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street. She was walking across South Centre City Parkway south of West Felicita Avenue just before 11 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle traveling north, Escondido Police said. The driver saw the woman, who was not in a crosswalk, but was unable to stop in time, police said. December 11, 2009 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with JCPenney Purchasing Corp., of Plano, Texas, today announced a voluntary recall of the Cooks Outdoor® BBQ Grills. The grill has a digital thermometer on the hood, stainless steel top and a global LP regulator. Lot number 780-2176 is printed on the underside of the grill’s stand. The drip pan on the grill does not allow for adequate drainage, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. The firm has received 11 reports of fires resulting from inadequate drainage. December 11, 2009 – Veronica Elizabeth Aguirre, 17, of Poway, was killed early today in a North County rollover crash that may have been alcohol-related, authorities said. Ms. Aguirre was killed when she lost control of her black Kia Sportage as she drove west on Mountain Meadow Road at Champagne Boulevard in the Hidden Meadows area. The car rolled several times. The crash was reported at 1:09 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Ms. Aguirre died at the crash scene.

December 10, 2009 – A faulty power strip sparked a Linda Vista apartment fire Wednesday, leaving four people in need of interim lodging, authorities reported. The non-injury blaze in the 6700 block of Kelly Street was reported just before 1 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFRD).
