pedestrian_killedJanuary 22, 2010 – An elderly woman was fatally struck by a television news vehicle while crossing a Kearny Mesa street outside of a crosswalk, police said.

The woman was crossing Shawline Street, near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, around 6:40 p.m. Thursday when the accident occurred, said San Diego Police Officer David Stafford.

A 50-year-old man driving the KFMB Channel 8 SUV saw the woman at the last second and swerved to avoid her but failed to do so, Stafford said, adding that she suffered severe head injuries and died shortly after arriving at a hospital.

Stafford said the driver, who was not hurt, was not at fault and will not likely face any charges. The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was in her early 80s, he said.

Thursday’s torrential rains were not believed to be a factor in the accident, he said.
