January 19, 2010 – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defect Investigations (ODI), Honda is recalling certain Model Year 2010 Acura MDX vehicles manufactured between October 7, 2009 and November 14, 2009. A bolt used to attach an interior trim piece to either the driver’s or passenger’s side A-Pillar may not have been installed during manufacturing. In the event of a crash resulting in side curtain air bag deployment, the trim piece may not remain properly secured to the A-Pillar, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and/or front seat passenger. January 19, 2010 – Huntington Meat Packing Inc., a Montebello, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 864,000 pounds of beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The problem was discovered during a Food Safety Assessment (FSA) by FSIS personnel. The FSA led to the determination that a further investigation of establishment records was warranted. January 19, 2010 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is today warning consumers about a counterfeit and potentially harmful version of Alli 60 mg capsules (120 count refill kit). Preliminary laboratory tests conducted by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the maker of the FDA approved over-the-counter weight-loss product, revealed that the counterfeit version did not contain orlistat, the active ingredient in its product. Instead, the counterfeit product contained the controlled substance sibutramine. Sibutramine is a drug that should not be used in certain patient populations or without physician oversight. January 15, 2010 – A 21-year-old Garden Grove man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following a crash with a sedan and an Orange County Transportation Authority bus that left 10 people injured, police said. The crash happened at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Street and Metropolitan Drive when a dark-colored minivan headed north on Lewis collided with a blue Honda Civic that was traveling east on Metropolitan, said Orange Police Sgt. January 15, 2010 – Johnson & Johnson is again expanding a recall of Tylenol caplets due to a moldy smell that made some users sick. The company says the problem also affects some lots of its fever and pain drug Motrin. January 15, 2010 – Ticketed passengers traveling through San Diego International Airport will be able to get the H1N1 vaccine and other preventative shots starting Friday, according to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The flu shots, which will be administered by Pacifica Medical, will be offered at four post-security locations in Terminals 1 and 2, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., according to the Airport Authority. January 15, 2010 – A 63-year-old disabled woman run down by a hit-and-run driver in Lakeside last week has died of her injuries. Judith Tellez suffered a broken back and legs, and a skull fracture and was in a coma until her death Tuesday night, family members said. Tellez was hit Jan. 4 as she was crossing Old Highway 80 near Los Coches Road, about 125 feet away from her home, officials with the California Highway Patrol said. January 15, 2010 – A 15-year-old Torrey Pines High School student suffered head injuries Thursday when an SUV driven by another student struck her in a parking lot on the Del Mar Heights campus, police said. The girl was hit about 7:30 a.m. by a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer near a stop sign in the parking lot, according to San Diego Police. January 14, 2010 – The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is encouraging residents who have not yet been vaccinated against the H1N1 influenza virus to do so. “We are still not out of the woods,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the County’s Public Health Officer. “The virus is still present throughout our community,” she said. “While many people have gotten vaccinated, there are still many more who have yet to get the vaccine. January 14, 2010 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Caramia Furniture and Mother Hubbard Cupboard’s, of Ontario, Canada, today announced a voluntary recall of the Diane Crib. This recall involves Caramia “Diane” drop-side cribs. The cribs were manufactured between September 2002 and June 2004. A label affixed to the inside of the headboard or footboard lists the manufacturing dates.
