pedestrianJanuary 25, 2010 – An investigation was under way Monday into the death of a woman who was struck by a car on an East County highway.

Rebecca Ann Phillips, 23, of San Diego, was struck on southbound SR 125 just north of Grossmont College Drive about 9:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings said.

She was a passenger in a green Ford Taurus that had pulled over to the right and she had just gotten out and was walking north on the shoulder, Pennings said.

For unknown reasons she turned and walked east into traffic lanes where she was hit by a red Chevy Metro being driven by a 42-year-old El Cajon man, Pennings said. The motorist was moving from the right lane to the next lane on the left when he struck Phillips. He told officers he did not see her, Pennings said.

Phillips died before she could be taken to a hospital.
