February 18, 2010 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Weeplay Kids LLC, of New York, N.Y., today announced a voluntary recall of Girls’ Hooded Sweatshirts with Drawstrings.
This recall involves girl’s sweatshirts sold under the Candy Queen and Akademiks brand names. Sweatshirts included in this recall have style numbers Q37519, A22090, A393343-3, A79405-226 and A79462-1. The sweatshirts were sold in sizes 2T through 16.
The sweatshirts have drawstrings through the hood which poses a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry volunt
ary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled in the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.
No incidents or injuries have been reported.
Approximately 11,800 sweatshirts have been sold at small retail stores nationwide from February 2008 through November 2008 for between $5 and $22.
Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
