February 5, 2010 – Anthem Blue Cross has told some customers it will raise their health insurance premiums as much as 39 percent beginning March 1. The increases, reported Friday by the Los Angeles Times, involve as many as 800,000 customers who buy individual coverage. People with group coverage aren’t affected. In a statement, the Woodland Hills-based insurer declined to specify the size of the rate changes or how many people will be affected. February 5, 2010 – A rollover crash in northwest Bakersfield Thursday morning slowed traffic for short time during the morning commute. The Bakersfield Police Department said the crash happened around 9 a.m. at Brimhall and Allen roads. Sergeant Mary DeGeare said Michael Walden, 22, was traveling south on Allen Road in a red 1991 Ford Explorer. Walden told police that he experienced brake problems approaching the red light at Brimhall. Police said he swerved to miss stopped traffic at the intersection, entered the intersection against the red and collided with Taylor Boles, 19, who was traveling east on Brimall Road …. »

February 5, 2010 – A car plunged down a steep cliff Thursday night, setting off a chain reaction that saw multiple cars slamming into debris and causing the closure of lanes on the I-15 at Highway 76. The accident began at 10:20 p.m. when a car broke through a guard rail, falling down a cliff. One person was trapped and needed to be rescued and airlifted to a hospital. As more cars approached the scene, they continued to collide with debris in the road.

February 4, 2010 – Toyota Motor Corp., acknowledged that it has begun fixing problems with the brakes in its Prius, but remains undecided about a recall, adding to the catalog of safety woes of the Japanese automaker. Toyota said Thursday that Prius models sold since late last month, including those shipped overseas, had the problem with the antilock brake system corrected. February 3, 2010 – Two people are injured following a collision between a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) minivan and a trolley at Park Boulevard and G Street in the East Village district of downtown San Diego. The northbound trolley was struck while crossing the intersection. Witnesses said the trolley had the green light and was honking its horn while approaching the intersection. February 3, 2010 – Two casino patrons were killed and eight people were hurt Wednesday when a speeding vehicle crashed through the entrance of a hotel in the southern Nevada resort town of Laughlin, police said. February 3, 2010 – The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a box truck was killed in Bakersfield when the box truck he was driving slammed into a turning big rig. Around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, a big rig was traveling westbound on Pond Road and stopped at the intersection of Pond Road and Highway 43, Officer Robert Rodriguez said. February 3, 2010 – A motorist who drove his SUV into a parked car, then pulled onto a sidewalk and pinned three people against a wall, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to DUI and hit-and-run charges.
