An SUV struck and killed a bicyclist on eastbound Clairemont Mesa Boulevard Thursday night. The Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the name of the bicyclist, but identified him as a 53-year-old San Diego resident. The incident occurred at about 5:50 p.m near the onramp to south Interstate 805. Officers claim the cyclist was riding west of the freeway and veered left in front of the Nissan Pathfinder. A Vista family is questioning why their 21-year-old son with Down syndrome was roughed up by a sheriff’s deputy while the young man was walking to his father’s bakery. Sheriff spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said the young man was on his way to the bakery about 8 p.m. Tuesday when a Deputy Sheriff, who was responding to a call of domestic violence, saw him and ordered him to stop. According to the Associated Press, California health officials have fined 12 hospitals $785,000 for mistakes that endangered patients. The California Department of Public Health announced fines Thursday for hospitals including those located in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. Some of the fines involved incidents where patients had objects left inside them after operations and had to undergo additional surgery. Others involved wrongly administered medications. In one case, investigators said a doctor’s improper use of a laser device caused or likely caused a patient’s death. In another, a doctor removed the wrong kidney from a patient. A 48 year old woman was killed on Tuesday morning when she was struck by an SUV on Old Highway 101 south of Basilone. The woman, a transient who frequented the area, walked in front of the 1992 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The driver was a 56 year old San Marcos man who was on his way to work at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station when the accident occurred. A 19-year-old man was injured in a trolley accident in El Cajon on Thursday morning. The man was at the station on North Marshall Avenue at Arnele Avenue at about 6 a.m. El Cajon police said the man attempted to get on one of the cars while the trolley was in motion. He got caught between cars and was dragged about 35 feet before being thrown off the track. The victim was alert and conscious when rescuers arrived, but he may have suffered internal injuries. An 11 year-old Poway boy suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries when a vehicle struck him as he rode his bicycle across the street Sunday evening. The vehicle was headed west on Edgemoor Street when it struck the boy at Brighton Avenue. The child, who failed to stop before crossing the street, was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital. The boy was not wearing a helmet or protective gear. Monday night a 29-year-old Rancho Penasquitos man was out walking his dog when he was struck and killed by a speeding motorcyclist. The 26-year-old motorcyclist was also killed in the collision. The motorcyclist was riding a 2011 Ducati and heading west on Carmel Mountain Road at about 9:30 pm. The pedestrian was crossing Sundance Avenue in a marked crosswalk when the motorcyclist struck him. Both men were thrown some 300 feet from the point of collision.
