Memorial Service Held for Cyclist Killed in SR-56 Crash

A memorial service was held Wednesday for Nick Venuto, 40, the cyclist killed on May 31 when an out of control SUV ran off SR-56 and up an embankment, onto the bike path Venuto was riding on. The service was held at Immaculata Church on the University of San Diego campus.  Venuto was a Poway resident who graduated from USD and married his wife, Deborah, in the Founder’s Chapel there in 1995.  A website has been set up in his honor: http://nickvenuto.com/. A woman was injured Monday evening after hitting a center divider in an attempt to avoid irrigation pipes spilled into the roadway by a big rig. The flat-bed rig was carrying large irrigation pipes which became unstrapped after the truck unexpectedly swerved and clipped an overpass bridge column just after 5:00 p.m.  The pipes were sent flying into the westbound lanes of I-10 at Jefferson Street in Palm Desert.    A woman hit the center divider as she attempted to avoid the pipes and was injured.  Ambulances responded to the scene.   Her condition is not yet available. YMCA Exec Injured in Bike Accident

Baron Herdelin-Doherty, the CEO of YMCA of San Diego County was injured May 31st when a vehicle rolled into the bicycle lane where he was traveling. Herdelin-Doherty came to San Diego from San Antonio where he experienced great success as the CEO of the YMCA of Greater San Antonio for seven years.  During his tenure in San Antonio, he was involved with opening seven branches and renovating three more.   He is also credited as being an influential factor in drastically increasing memberships, erasing the corporation’s debt,  and increasing annual fundraising proceeds and revenue. A motorist crashed her car into a bus stop Saturday evening, killing a woman and injuring her son and boyfriend.  The crash occurred just before 8:00 p.m. in the 4800 block of University Avenue.  The driver has been identified as 71-year-old Jean Chizer-Williams of San Diego.  According to police, Chizer-Williams is diabetic and reportedly had low-blood sugar when the crash occurred. A driver was injured in a crash on State Route 78 in San Marcos on Saturday.  The crash occurred just before 11 a.m., on eastbound S-R 78 just west of the Nordahl Road exit. According to CHP, a driver in a grey vehicle hit the center divide and overturned after being cut off by another vehicle. One person was injured in a rollover crash on State Route 79 near Warner Springs early Saturday morning.  The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. in the 41000 block of State Route 79. A white two-door sedan rolled after rounding a sharp right turn.  The vehicle ended up on its side, according to CHP officials. Oakland Man Struck and Killed by Amtrak Train

A man was struck and killed Thursday afternoon in Oakland by an Amtrak train bound from Sacramento to San Jose. The Capitol Corridor train struck the man shortly before 12:15 p.m. just south of Jack London Square.  The man did not have identification on him and coroner’s officials are currently trying to identifying by his fingerprints.  It is currently unknown why the man was on the tracks. Bicyclist Killed in Rancho Penasquitos SUV Crash Identified

A bicyclist killed Tuesday night when an out-of-control SUV careened into a bike path off state Route 56 has been identified by friends and family as Nick Venuto, a 40-year-old married father of two from Poway.  Venuto is survived by his wife, Deb, a 12-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter.  Venuto was a member of the San Diego Descenders bicycle club.  The club is planning to organize a ride in his memory. Venuto was also the corporate controller at Sapphire Energy, a bioenergy company in San Diego.  Sapphire has released a statement praising Venuto as a highly valued employee who will …. » Read more »

La Mesa Fire Causes Injuries and Millions in Property Damage

A two-alarm fire was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday at Lake Park Condominiums, a complex off Lake Murray in La Mesa.  Property damage is still being assessed, but is expected to be between $1 million and $3 million.  A final damage total is pending a building-engineer inspection. The fire started in a second-floor unit of the four story complex.
