Valley High Teacher Arrested on Suspicion of Sexual Contact with a Student

A teacher from Valley High School in Escondido was arrested Friday on suspicion of inappropriate sexual contact with  one of his students. According to police, the former student, now 19 years old, made the allegations against Mario Humerez, 35, of San Marcos, in early June.  The student told police the relationship began when she was 16, and continued for over a year.  She alleged two specific incidents of inappropriate sexual contact which occurred in his classroom while other students were present. Memorial Service Held for Cyclist Killed in SR-56 Crash

A memorial service was held Wednesday for Nick Venuto, 40, the cyclist killed on May 31 when an out of control SUV ran off SR-56 and up an embankment, onto the bike path Venuto was riding on. La Mesa Fire Causes Injuries and Millions in Property Damage

A two-alarm fire was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday at Lake Park Condominiums, a complex off Lake Murray in La Mesa.  Property damage is still being assessed, but is expected to be between $1 million and $3 million.  A final damage total is pending a building-engineer inspection. The fire started in a second-floor unit of the four story complex. Karate Teacher Sentenced to 26 Years For Molesting Student

Eric Protas, a karate instructor who operated a popular martial arts studio in Allied Gardens, has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for repeatedly molesting a teenage male student.   Protas, a La Mesa resident, pleaded guilty back in February to 29 counts of differing forms of sexual abuse.  According to the District Attorney’s office, the incidents occurred over a nine-month period in 2009 and 2010.  The victim was 13 years old when the crimes were committed. Daycare Closed Following Molestation Accusations

A southeastern daycare has been closed temporarily pending a state licensing investigation, according to San Diego police.  The closure was prompted by allegations of molestation of children by the operator’s husband.  The operator’s husband was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of molesting a 4-year-old girl and her two older brothers. Shining Stars Daycare is located in the Shelltown neighborhood on Boston Avenue. Monday, August 23, 2010 at 10:29 a.m. Federal workplace safety officials have fined SeaWorld $75,000 following an investigation into the death of a trainer at the company’s Orlando park six months ago. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a “willful” citation to SeaWorld for exposing its employees to “struck-by” and drowning hazards when interacting with killer whales.
