An El Cajon man died and three people were injured in a head-on crash along state Route 94 in Dulzura Saturday evening, officials said. A Ford Ranger pickup and a Nissan Sentra collided on the highway east of Community Building Road about 5:35 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings said. The 69-year-old Sentra driver died at the scene and his wife, a front-seat passenger, suffered critical injuries, Pennings said. The wife was airlifted to UC San Diego Medical Center, Cal Fire Capt. According to San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, two additional victims of Sunday’s crash outside Big Bear have been identified. They are Rubicelia Escobedo Flores, 34, and Mario Garcia Santoyo, 32. Both were residents of Tijuana. There was no identification of the seventh victim as of Tuesday morning. The Mexican government has been working with families of those dead who were Mexican citizens to return their bodies to Mexico, Carolina Zaragoza Flores, head of the Mexican Consulate in San Bernardino, said in an interview. A Vista family is questioning why their 21-year-old son with Down syndrome was roughed up by a sheriff’s deputy while the young man was walking to his father’s bakery. Sheriff spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said the young man was on his way to the bakery about 8 p.m. Tuesday when a Deputy Sheriff, who was responding to a call of domestic violence, saw him and ordered him to stop. According to the Associated Press, California health officials have fined 12 hospitals $785,000 for mistakes that endangered patients. The California Department of Public Health announced fines Thursday for hospitals including those located in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. Some of the fines involved incidents where patients had objects left inside them after operations and had to undergo additional surgery. Others involved wrongly administered medications. In one case, investigators said a doctor’s improper use of a laser device caused or likely caused a patient’s death. In another, a doctor removed the wrong kidney from a patient. Authorities say they have fixed an ammonia leak that sickened workers at a Fresno winery, but the area remains cordoned off. Fresno Fire spokesman Sean Johnson says investigators determined that a pipe was the source of a leak discovered Oct. 11, 2012 at the Golden State Vintners plant. The Fresno winery is in an agricultural area, so there are no homes within the 1-mile evacuation zone. However, nearby residents have been advised to stay indoors, turn off their air conditioners and keep their windows closed. A San Diego man who suffered serious injuries last week when a car collided with his bicycle near Valley Center died Sunday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office. The victim was injured Sept. 16 while riding his bicycle east along Woods Valley Road near Cool Water Ranch Road. A big rig collided with several cars Tuesday morning closing all southbound lanes of Antelope Valley (14) Freeway. Nineteen vehicles were involved and 15 individuals were injured and taken to the hospital, including two patients in critical condition, according to the LA County Fire Department. A truck towing two trailers of sand or dirt collided with multiple passenger cars causing the cars to pile on top of each other in the roadway. Eleven people injured Saturday afternoon were transported to a nearby hospital after a two vehicle rollover accident on Interstate 8 east of Imperial Hwy, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers say a female driver and a van with 10 patients from a nursing home collided with each other east bound I-8. Pedro Antonio Sainz, a 28-year-old man, allegedly caused a Mountain View-area freeway pileup that killed a Las Vegas couple and injured two other people and then fled the scene. He was jailed on suspicion of drunken driving and hit-and-run. Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Sainz lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 805, authorities said. A 25-year-old woman from Kerman was struck and killed by a Fresno County sheriff’s cruiser. The accident occurred Monday night in Fresno on Highway 145 near of Interstate 5. The woman was walking north on the highway and was in the roadway when she was hit by deputy Kurt Rossi’s cruiser. The deputy was not injured. A toxicology test will be performed on the woman.
