October 7, 2009 – A blowout caused an SUV to overturn yesterday, killing an 85-year-old Adelanto woman, according to San Bernardino County coroner’s officials. Hattie Kaufman died at the scene of the 3:43 p.m. accident Wednesday at Mojave and Mesa Linda Drives. Kaufman was a passenger in the 2001 Ford SUV when the right rear tire popped, causing the vehicle to flip multiple times, ejecting Kaufman, witnesses told investigators. October 7, 2009 – A consumer advocacy group says that three million Jeep Grand Cherokees have a potential fire danger from their gas tanks which is so high that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should order a recall. Grand Cherokees from the 1993 through 2004 model years have “a fatal crash-fire occurrence rate that is about four times higher than SUV’s made by other companies,” Clarence Ditlow, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, wrote in the request to the NHTSA. October 7, 2009 – The Fallbrook Hospital District Skilled Nursing Facility has been given the most severe penalty under state law governing health-care facilities because of inadequate care that led to a resident’s death, a state official said today. The facility on Potter Street near Elder Street has been given an “AA” citation and a $90,000 fine, said Dr. Mark Horton, director of the state Department of Public Health. October 7, 2009 – Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, the world’s largest brewer, said today that it will raise $2.7 billion from selling its U.S. theme parks to the Blackstone Group. The sale of three SeaWorld parks, two Busch Gardens parks and five others is the largest of a string of AB InBev selloffs to help pay for the $52 billion takeover deal that formed it last year. AB InBev’s Busch Entertainment Corporation is the second-largest theme park operator in the United States after Disney and attracts some 25 million visitors every year. October 7, 2009 – The Supreme Court is taking on a long-running legal fight today over an 8-foot cross that stands as a World War I memorial in the vast Mojave National Preserve in California. The justices will hear arguments about an appeals court ruling that ordered that the cross be torn down. October 7, 2009 – A mother of three faces charges of felony driving under the influence and child endangerment after crashing into a dirt embankment in Lakeside yesterday afternoon, according to a CHP spokesman. October 7, 2009 – A teen accused of crashing a car carrying four of his Torrey Pines High School classmates as they left a party, killing one of the boys, will not be charged as an adult, a district attorney’s spokesman said on Tuesday. Updated October 6, 2009 – A 17-year-old accused of being at the wheel when a Mazda crashed in Rancho Santa Fe, killing a classmate and injuring another, will face multiple charges, officials said today. The crash took place during the early hours of Sunday in Rancho Santa Fe. Five students from Torrey Pines High School were in the car at the time, including Alex Capozza, 17, who was killed in the crash, and Jamie Arnold, also 17, who was hospitalized with serious injuries after the wreck. October 6, 2009 – Investigators of a suspected drunken driving crash that killed a Torrey Pines High School senior are expected to turn over their findings today to prosecutors, who will decide whether to prosecute the driver — a classmate of the victim.
