Freightliner Trucks Recall – Engine Cooling

FreightlinerNovember 30, 2009 – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defect Investigations (ODI), Daimler Trucks is recalling certain Model Year 2008 and 2010 Freightliner M2, Custom Chassis, MT55 and Sterling Acterra vehicles manufactured between April 4, 2007 and July 15, 2009, equipped with Cummins ISC CM2150 and ISL CM2150 model diesel engines.

The vehicles may be designed with a hard wired, dash-mounted switch that enables the vehicle operator to inhibit after-treatment diesel particulate filter regeneration in environments where the operator believes it may be unsafe for elevated exhaust temperatures.  Due to an issue with the logic in the ECM software in these engines, the switch may not function correctly, leading the operator to believe that the switch is in “inhibit” mode when it is not.  This condition will permit hot exhaust gases to exit the vehicle tailpipe, increasing the risk of melting or burning of nearby surfaces, or a fire.

Two Killed in Crash on I-15

November 10, 2009 – A man and a woman in their 60s who were passengers in a sports utility vehicle that rolled down an embankment off I-15 north of Escondido were killed in the single-vehicle wreck.

The victims, both from Mexico, were pronounced dead at the scene, said CHP Officer Eric Newbury. Their names were being withheld pending family notification, he said.

The 2002 Chevy Trailblazer driven by 40-year-old Ramon Arciniega of Upland was traveling north on I-15, just noshredded tirerth of Deer Springs Road, when the tread peeled off the left rear tire around 6:35 p.m. Monday, Newbury said.

The driver applied the brakes but lost control of the vehicle, which crossed over onto the right shoulder and rolled down an embankment, overturning several times before it came to rest on its roof, blocking Champagne Boulevard, which runs parallel to the freeway, he said.

The right front passenger, a 64-year-old man from Mexico, and the right rear passenger, a 63-year-old woman from Mexico, were pronounced dead at the scene, Newbury said.

Arciniega and his left rear passenger, 52-year-old Evangelina Quiroz of Upland, were transported to Palomar Medical Center, he said. Their conditions were not immediately reported.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash, Newbury said. Champagne Boulevard was closed for about four hours as investigators worked at the scene, he said.

City Heights man dies in crash near Ramona

September 29, 2009 – A 51-year-old City Heights man was found dead near Ramona on a rural road where he crashed his car into a large boulder, authorities said today.

The single-vehicle crash on Mussey Grade Road near Kimball Valley Road in the Fernbrook area was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday, when the wreckage was discovered, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Evidence at the scene suggest the crash occurred several hours earlier, CHP Officer Brian Pennings said.  A woman who lives along Mussey Grade Road discovered the wrecked 1997 BMW 740i and called 911 after seeing the man unresponsive in the driver’s seat, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Cal Fire paramedics and CHP officers arrived and determined the man was dead, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.

The man, who recently lost his job as a car salesman, lived with roommates in a home in City Heights, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
