Poropat sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The impact caused the Toyota minivan to go down the east side embankment of the freeway. Its occupants sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Neither the driver of the Peterbilt nor the driver of the Dodge were injured in the crash.

The vehicles may be designed with a hard wired, dash-mounted switch that enables the vehicle operator to inhibit after-treatment diesel particulate filter regeneration in environments where the operator believes it may be unsafe for elevated exhaust temperatures. Due to an issue with the logic in the ECM software in these engines, the switch may not function correctly, leading the operator to believe that the switch is in “inhibit” mode when it is not. This condition will permit hot exhaust gases to exit the vehicle tailpipe, increasing the risk of melting or burning of nearby surfaces, or a fire.

The victims, both from Mexico, were pronounced dead at the scene, said CHP Officer Eric Newbury. Their names were being withheld pending family notification, he said.

The 2002 Chevy Trailblazer driven by 40-year-old Ramon Arciniega of Upland was traveling north on I-15, just north of Deer Springs Road, when the tread peeled off the left rear tire around 6:35 p.m. Monday, Newbury said.

The driver applied the brakes but lost control of the vehicle, which crossed over onto the right shoulder and rolled down an embankment, overturning several times before it came to rest on its roof, blocking Champagne Boulevard, which runs parallel to the freeway, he said.

The right front passenger, a 64-year-old man from Mexico, and the right rear passenger, a 63-year-old woman from Mexico, were pronounced dead at the scene, Newbury said.

Arciniega and his left rear passenger, 52-year-old Evangelina Quiroz of Upland, were transported to Palomar Medical Center, he said. Their conditions were not immediately reported.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors in the crash, Newbury said. Champagne Boulevard was closed for about four hours as investigators worked at the scene, he said.
