An elderly man was killed when when he was pinned between a trash bin and a wall in La Jolla. Police believe a tractor-trailor backed into the dumpster pinning the man against the wall. His body was found by a Jonathan’s Market employee Wednesday morning.

A Huntington Park man died Friday night when a forklift fell on him in a workplace accident.

According to authorities, the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the DHL building at 2555 E. Olympic Boulevard. The man was identified as 68-year-old Mario Casillas Arreola.

A pedestrian died Tuesday night, according to authorities, after being hit by a Coaster train in Carlsbad.

The accident occurred around 6 p.m., officials said, at the Carlsbad Village Station at Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard. The identity of the pedestrian was not released.

An investigation into the accident was ongoing.

Woman Dies In Hit-And-Run Accident

A 25-year-old woman who was walking on state Route 76 at 3:30 a.m. Monday died after she was struck by a 2002 Ford Taurus. According to authoriries, the driver, 69-year-old Rickey Burns of Escondido, was driving 55 miles per hour when he struck the woman.

After fleeing the scene, Burns parked the Taurus nearby and left the area by foot with his two passengers, authorities said. Witnesses described Burns and his passengers to law enforcement officials and he was apprehended less than an hour after the accident. The passengers were not arrested.

Authorities tested Burns for driving under the influence, but the results were negative. He was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run.

The identity of the victim was not released.

The number of accidental drownings is up over last year in San Diego County prompting reminders from local officials to parents and other adults that they should closely watch children as summer draws to a close. So far this year, six children under the age of 2 have died as a result of accidental drowning. According to county figures, two children died in a backyard pool, one in a jacuzzi, two in other backyard bodies of water and one in a bathtub. There were four accidental drownings of children last year and nine in 2009.

Suspect in Hit and Run Death Turns Himself In

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, a suspect in the hit and run death of cyclist James Swarzman has turned himself in.

Encino resident, James Swarzman, was riding with a group in Leucadia around 1 a.m. Sunday when he was struck by a Dodge Ram which subsequently fled the scene. According to one witness, the vehicle drifted between the middle of the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes before striking Swarzman from behind.

Joseph Ricardo Fernandez, a 46 year-old man from Carlsbad, contacted Carlsbad police on Monday to inform them he was involved in a collision in his Dodge Ram 1500. Authorities determined his vehicle matched that reported on the scene. Fernandez was arrested Monday evening and his vehicle was impounded as evidence. According to police, the damage to Fernandez’s vehicle is consistent with the evidence obtained at the scene of the collision. Fernandez was booked into the Vista Detention Facility and charged with felony hit-and-run. The investigation is still continuing.

Swarzman was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and was pronounced dead three hours after the accident.

Man Pleads Guilty In Fatal Crash

Nicholas Arthur Thibault, 28, pleaded guilty Tuesday to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He veered off the road as he exited Interstate 805 in City Heights, killing Brent Routley who was camping in shrubbery off the exit.

He faces up to six years in state prison. He will be sentenced May 10 by Judge Theodore Weathers.

Pedestrian Killed in Oceanside Accident

A woman died after being hit by a car Sunday night while crossing Mission Avenue in Oceanside. The woman was struck while crossing the street at about 10 p.m. by the driver of a 1991 Toyota Corolla heading west near Fireside Street. The woman was transported by Oceanside Fire Department paramedics and died at the hospital. Her identity has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing, and any witnesses to the accident are asked to call Oceanside police Officer Eric Anderson at (760) 435-4796.

Series of Early Morning Accidents on I-8 Leave One Dead, One Injured

Three automobile accidents occurred on I-8 Saturday morning, leaving one man dead and another person injured. An unknown hit-and-run driver remains at large.

A 26-year-old man, who is suspected of driving under the influence, crashed his black Ford ranger pick-up truck into a guard rail in the center median near Waring Road.

When the driver and his male passenger, age 29, exited the vehicle, the passenger was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

That victim was transported to Mercy Hospital and died later that day. The vehicle that fled the scene was identified as a small Toyota or Nissan sedan. CHP Investigators are still searching for the driver.

The driver of the black pickup was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

A third accident happened in Mission Valley at around 5:30 a.m. One person was injured and transported to Mercy Hospital.

The CHP is still investigating these accidents, and anyone with information is urged to call CHP border communications office at (858) 637-3800 or San Diego CHP office at (619) 220-5492.
