Inflatable Water Slides Recalled After Woman’s Death

Over 20,000 inflatable water slides for in-ground pools are being recalled following the death of one woman, and severe injuries of others, when the “Banzai” slides deflated, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said last Thursday.

The faulty slides were blamed for the death of a 29-year-old Colorado mother who died in Andover, Massachusetts. The woman had fractured her neck after hitting her head at the bottom of the slide, which had partially deflated, according to a statement from CPSC, which announced the recall with Wal-Mart Stores and Toys ‘R’ Us Inc.

The slides, made by Manley Toys, Ltd., and emblazoned with the words “Banzai Splash,” were designed to be placed over the edge of in-ground swimming pools, which are generally made of concrete.

Defective slides were also tied to injuries suffered by a 24-year-old man from Springfield, Missouri, who became a quadriplegic, and a woman from Allentown, Pennsylvania, who fractured her neck, CPSC said.

The recall involves about 21,000 slides sold nationwide for about $250 from January 2005 through June 2009. The recalled slides have the barcode 2675315734 and model number 15734 printed on the packaging but not on the actual slide.

CPSC urged consumers to return the entire blue and yellow slide, or to cut out two safety-warning notices on the slide, and to return them to Wal-Mart or Toys ‘R’ Us stores for a full refund.

Man Killed After Tow Truck Hits Parked Car

One person was killed after a tow truck crashed into the back of a parked car Thursday morning, authorities said.

The crash occurred just before 2 a.m., while the Chevrolet Impala was parked along Springdale Street, said Sgt. J. Haught of the Huntington Beach Police Department’s traffic division.

A 77-year-old man and his 13-year-old grandson were sitting in the car just south of McCarthy Street when a 2011 Dodge Ram tow truck crashed into the back of the parked car, according to a statement released by the department.

The driver of the tow truck was not injured, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the boy suffered minor injuries.

Orange County Coroner’s Office officials late Thursday identified the man as Crawford Grant Reeves of Huntington Beach.

Woman Killed in Paragliding Crash at Torrey Pines

Pamela Hargett, a 52-year-old South Carolina woman, was killed Saturday, May 12^th, 2012 in a paragliding accident in the Torrey Pines area of San Diego, officials said. She was an experienced pilot who had trained in San Diego.

According to the San Diego County medical examiner, “for unknown reasons, she lost control and crashed into the side of the cliff.” The downed glider came to rest suspended on a cliff near Black’s Beach, said lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma. Her fiancé, who also was paragliding, called 911.

At one point, as many as 20 rescuers struggled to reach Hargett. “It was in a very difficult area for rescue crews to get to,” said lifeguard Lt. John Everhart. Lifeguards rappelled down the cliff and secured the unconscious paraglider, Lerma said. Hargett was airlifted to a hospital in La Jolla, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending.

The city-owned Torrey Pines Gliderport is one of the nation’s major venues for hang gliding and paragliding.

Two Teenagers Killed in High Speed Crash

Two Santee teenagers were killed and three others injured late Wednesday night. The teenagers were driving on state Route 52 east in what witnesses said was a race with another car. The car struck a center median, flipping several times. Witnesses stated they believe that the car was going 100 mph.

The dead teenagers have been identified as Jayli James Campbell and Anthony Foreman. According to the California Highway Patrol, drivers and passengers of both cars were high school friends who had attended a beach party in La Jolla.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. near the Convoy Street off-ramp in Kearny Mesa. All of the victims were in a Volkswagen Passat.
